Mukurtu Mobile Indigenous Community Archive Project

In this project, we helped design a digital hub for indigenous groups/organizations of Latin American origin. For my portion, my partner Lili Raygoza partner and I worked on the Margarita Gutierrez Collection and Maylei Blackwell Collection as part of the overall CONAMI (Coordinadora Nacional de Mujeres Indigenas) digital heritage site. The purpose of this project was to provide the indigenous groups with a Digital Collection Platform that they could use archive their histories, cultures, and experiences in a way that promoted their own epistemological viewpoint. As many indigenous cultures practice stratified and secret knowledge, they also have the option not to make their collections public. All of the material are written in Spanish. Some of the materials include photos, reports, documents, newsletters, and pamphlets, with all of theme covering a central theme of indigenous rights or indigenous women’s rights. Lili and I provided the metadata for the various materials and uploaded them to the sight. We left some of the metadata blank so that the community could fill them in themselves, such as Cultural Narrative, Traditional Knowledge, and Community Records. We choose to write the description in Spanish but kept everything else in English.
